God’s Plans Are Better Than Your Plans

The story of my life: I made a plan and God laughed.

Because I am a pastor’s kid, many assumed I would become a pastor. “Not me. No way. No how.” Then I became a pastor.

Because I blog about grace, some said I should write a book. “Not going to happen.” It happened.

Because I love unpacking scripture, some suggested I make a Bible commentary. “Not a chance.” And now I’m writing a commentary.

It’s funny how life works out.

Despite my initial reluctance to do these things, I have learned that God’s plans are always better than my own. Truly, he knows us better than we know ourselves.

Take the Grace Commentary, for example. I have gone from, “no way am I doing this” to, “I can’t wait to see what happens next!”

I know the commentary is a God-thing because I regularly get messages like these:

I am a youth pastor, so I am using the Grace Commentary weekly to help me write my lessons, especially for ‘sticky’ verses where I am struggling to see grace.

Two Lists

I want to show you a list of 7 names. Count how many you recognize:

  1. Leonardo da Vinci
  2. Johann Sebastian Bach
  3. Ludwig van Beethoven
  4. Johannes Brahms
  5. Rembrandt
  6. George Gershwin
  7. Jackson Pollock

I’m guessing you may be familiar with most of the names on that list. Maybe you recognized 6 or 7 names.

Now I want to show you a second list of names. You probably won’t recognize any of these people:

  1. Isabella d’Este
  2. Leopold of Anhalt-Köthen
  3. Joseph Franz Maximilian
  4. Viktor von Miller
  5. Andries de Graeff
  6. Paul Whiteman
  7. Clement Greenberg

What you might not realize is these two lists are connected. The people on the second list were patrons of the people in the first. Without people like Joe Maximilian, a man with no musical talent but who recognized it when he saw it, you might not have heard of Ludwig van Beethoven. So thank you, Joe Maximilian!

I’m no Beethoven, but like him I could not do what I do without the support of patrons. My patrons may not write about grace, but without their support, neither would I.

An Early Look at Paul’s Next Book

My next book is a labor of love. I have been working on it for seven years and it’s time to let you know. It’s about a subject near and dear to my heart – the parables of Jesus.

The parables of Jesus are the world’s most popular stories. Millions of people know them. Each week, the parables are taught from pulpits and in Sunday School classes all over the world.

The parables reveal the way to life, yet they are often hijacked to preach dead works and self-righteousness. Apparently the parable of the Good Samaritan is about being kind to others, and the parable of the Shrewd Manager is about giving to the poor.

There is nothing wrong with being kind and generous, but Jesus did not come to repeat religious clichés.

Some use the parables to portray God as angry and uncaring. Apparently he’s asleep (the Friend at Midnight), he’s mean and corruptible (the Unjust Judge), and he murders people (the parable of the Wedding Banquet).

Nope.

Jesus was not another old covenant preacher frightening people with a scary God. He was the herald of the new covenant which is why his stories were full of surprises and reversals. They were new. They were different.

They were unlike anything we’d heard before.

Through his stories Jesus described a right-side up kingdom where prodigals are received, tax collectors are justified, and outcasts are invited to feasts. It’s a kingdom of justice and peace, of heaven on earth.

The disciples asked Jesus why he spoke in parables. Why not speak plainly? But plain speaking often led to hostility from religious leaders and skeptical crowds. Since some weren’t ready to receive the gospel, he told stories “to create readiness, to nudge people toward receptive insight” (Matt. 13:13, MSG).

The stories of Jesus disarm us. They resonate with our spirits and awaken our hunger for the things of God.

But only if they are told right. Which they usually aren’t. To twist the stories of Jesus into an anti-grace message is surely one of the greatest harms ever inflicted.

I have read many books and heard countless sermons on the parables of Jesus and found few that interpret these stories through the lens of the new covenant. Most preach dead works or mixture. “Get busy for Jesus.” “Prove your faithfulness through endless praying.” “Turn or burn.”

Yecch.

We need to take another look at the parables of Jesus. We need to read them through the lens of grace.

For the past seven years I have been working off-and-on on a grace-based book tentatively titled The Parables of Jesus. It is one of the biggest projects I have undertaken.

When I started I had no idea how big it would grow, but the more I dig into these treasures, the more I found.

The parables of Jesus are truly the richest and most powerful stories ever told. Read them right and they will change you. They will help you experience the divine life that is ours in Christ.

It has been a long time coming, but I’m approaching the home stretch. If all goes to plan, my new book should be available by the middle of next year. I trust it will be worth the wait.

Who Are the Grace Preachers?

Can you recommend a grace-based church in my area?

I get asked this question a lot. What people want to know is, where are the grace preachers? Or who are the grace preachers?

As if there was a special directory of those preaching grace.

Who are the hypergrace preachers? I usually recommend Paul, John, Peter, James, and Jesus of course. And let’s not forget David, Isaiah, Zechariah, Jeremiah, Jonah, Joel and even Moses.

But that’s not the answer people are looking for.

Grace preachers list

About 15 years ago a prominent grace preacher thought about starting a database of like-minded churches. We all thought it was a terrific idea, but it never got off the ground. Turns out making a list of grace preachers is hard.

Where do you draw the line? What defines a grace preacher? And what is grace?

A grace preacher is anyone who preaches the unconditional love of God, with no ifs, buts, or maybes. Most preachers preach the gospel of grace, but a grace preacher preaches grace alone.

Not grace plus law or grace plus works. Just grace.

“Well, sure, we all need grace for salvation. But what about sanctification?”

Just grace.

“What about spiritual growth?”

Just grace.

“What about…”

Just grace.

In the new covenant, we stand on grace alone. All the blessings of heaven come to us by grace alone (Eph. 1:3).

Those who don’t preach just grace can be recognized by the sticks and carrots they add to their mixed-grace message.

“If you confess, you’ll be forgiven. If you do right, you’ll be accepted. If you act holy, you’ll become holy.”

Others dismiss what they call “the modern grace message,” as though grace was some kind of fad.

These are dangerous messages. You can’t mix law, works and grace any more than you can mix flesh with faith. And grace is anything but modern. The message of radical, extreme hypergrace is biblical.

Dismiss or dilute grace and you may fall from grace.

Who are the grace preachers?

A true grace preacher will always point you to Jesus and what he has done and what you can do because of what he has done. Because of Jesus you are loved, forgiven, accepted, righteous, holy, and all the other things. All your needs are supplied on account of his riches in grace (Eph. 2:7, Php. 4:19).

Your part is simply to rest in his finished work and receive by faith God’s gracious provision.

(That’s hardly a recipe for idleness, by the way. Those who are abiding in the Vine are fruitful and often work harder than those trying to make bricks without straw. But I digress.)

So how do you find a grace preacher? Here are two ways.

A list of those who preach grace

I maintain a modest list of “Grace preachers” which includes ministries, bloggers, and authors. But if you are looking for a grace-preaching church, I recommend you check out Ted Nelson’s Locate Grace Ministries.

Ted visits a lot of churches and he is personally familiar with many of the ministries he lists. He puts a huge amount of effort into maintaining his database and his website is an invaluable tool. Best of all, the database is constantly being updated as new churches get added. (Perhaps you want to add yours?)

When people ask me to recommend a grace preacher or a grace church in their area, I invariably steer them towards Ted’s Locate Grace Ministries website. It’s a much-needed resource that will only get better with time. I encourage you to check it out.

Is it God’s Will for You to Suffer (1 Peter 4:19)

“Paul, why are you writing a Bible commentary? There are so many.”

It’s true. There are many Bible commentaries out there. But as far as I know, there are no grace-based commentaries. Instead, there are commentaries that mix grace with works leaving you confused, anxious, and uncertain.

Let me give you an example:

Those also who suffer according to the will of God shall entrust their souls to a faithful Creator in doing what is right. (1 Peter 4:19)

What does it mean to suffer according to the will of God? Your answer to that question reveals whether you are established in grace.

Read the verse in context and we’ll see that the suffering Peter is talking about is the fiery ordeal of persecution (1 Pet. 4:12). He’s writing to believers who were enduring a painful and unjust trial because they were Christians.

Some lost their property, while others lost their lives. And apparently this was God’s will. God was behind their suffering.

Or was he.

Any time we go through trials and hardships, we may be tempted to ask, “Lord, why are you doing this to me? Do you want me to suffer? Is this your will?”

These are weighty questions that deserve serious answers. So we turn to our favorite study Bible or commentary to unpack this verse and this is what we find:

  • Some commentators, like Matthew Henry, say “All the sufferings that befall good people come upon them according to the will of God.” So yes, it is God’s will for you to suffer.
  • Others write lengthy essays that say nothing of substance.
  • A few change Peter’s words or they wriggle out of answering the question.

Depending on who you read, you will come away feeling either confused, really confused, or condemned. You certainly won’t find any comfort.

I know this because I have read many books and commentaries on the passage above and NOT ONE of them did anything to encourage or strengthen my faith. The consensus seems to be that God either wants you to suffer or he allows it because he’s mysterious and sovereign and his ways are higher than your ways.

It makes me shake my head.

Let me put your mind at ease right now: It is NOT God’s will for you to suffer, be persecuted, or mistreated for being a Christian. Peter says no such thing.

Let’s take a closer look at his words:

Those who suffer according to the will of God…

The key phrase here is the will of God, which is one of Peter’s favorite phrases. He uses it repeatedly. He says the will of God is for you to walk in newness of life by putting your faith in his Son Jesus (1 Pet. 4:2, 6).

To suffer for the will of God is to suffer for being a Christian. That’s it. Peter says so three verses earlier:

If anyone suffers as a Christian… (1 Peter 4:16)

To suffer according to the will of God is to be persecuted for your faith. It’s being bullied because you are in the will of God. So obviously God is not the one persecuting you. A just God cannot inflict unjust suffering.

This is obvious, right? Yet many who should know better don’t see it. They wring their hands and say a lot of nonsense that is baloney at best and blasphemy at worst.

Can you imagine Jesus throwing stones at Stephen or flogging Paul? It’s ridiculous. So why do we listen to those who suggest this sort of suffering is the Father’s will?

Let’s look at the next part of that verse:

…entrust their souls to a faithful Creator in doing what is right. (1 Peter 4:19)

If you are going through hard times on account of your faith, you can trust the Creator because he is faithful. He will never leave you or let you down. That’s good news to encourage you.

Now we come to the final part:

…in doing what is right. (1 Peter 4:19)

In the old covenant, doing right meant keeping the rules, but in the new covenant doing right is what we do when we’re living in right relationship with the faithful Creator. It’s putting your faith in the Son of God and living in submission to the will of God.

Right believing leads to right living. When your heart is settled in the faithfulness of God, you will live righteously without any conscious effort. The Righteous One will fill your heart with his righteous desires and bear his righteous fruit in your life.

Put it altogether and Peter is saying something like this:

If you are following God and suffering for it, keep trusting him. He will never fail you. Keep walking in the light of his love and grace.

Peter’s first epistle, when read through the lens of the new covenant, is a huge source of encouragement for the afflicted. It is God’s gift to the persecuted believer, and one of the most incredible letters ever written.

Do we need a New Covenant Study Bible?

The Bible contains the most beautiful, life-giving words. Yet many don’t see them because they’re reading scripture through the wrong lens. Consider the following verse:

If you address as Father the One who impartially judges according to each one’s work, conduct yourselves in fear during the time of your stay on earth… (1 Peter 1:17)

What does that verse mean? Many people have no idea. Or rather, they have the wrong idea because they have been raised with a mindset that says you have to perform and produce to please the Father.

Do you know what that verse means? Maybe you see three words – judges, work, and fear – and come to all sorts of scary conclusions.

“It sounds like there’s some kind of judgment coming so I’d better work hard and be afraid for as long as I live.”

Which sounds horrible. That can’t be right. Can it?

You reach for your nearest study Bible or commentary and find that, no, you’re on the money.

“God is scary, so watch yourself.”

No, no, no! Change your lens. Stop reading the Bible through an old covenant lens of rules and behavior, and put on your new covenant glasses.

If there was such a thing as a new covenant study Bible, it would highlight one word in the passage above: Father.

If you address as Father…

Do you address God as Father? I hope so because God is your heavenly Father. Jesus said so.

But do you believe it? Do you actually call God Father?

Perhaps you don’t think of God in such familiar terms. If you have been raised with an old covenant emphasis on performance, you might see God as a bookkeeper recording your sins or a judge condemning your failures.

In the old covenant, no one addressed the Almighty as Father. But after Jesus, every New Testament writer did.

Calling God Father is what makes the new covenant new.

“But what about the part where it says we are judged for our work?”

Jesus said the only work that impresses God the Father is the “work” of believing in the One he sent (John 6:29). We are judged by our response to Jesus. Did we trust him? Did we rest in his finished work or rely on our own dead works? That sort of thing.

“But if God is our Father, why do we need to conduct ourselves in fear?”

In the new covenant, the fear of God means living in reverence and awe of God. To fear the Lord is to worship him.

Put it altogether and Peter is saying, “If you know God as your heavenly Father, let your conduct on earth be your spiritual act of worship.”

In other words, live in response to the goodness of God. Which is so much better than that scary interpretation.

Read Peter’s letter from cover to cover and you will find that it is full of reasons for worshipping the God we know as Father. We worship the Lord because:

  • he redeemed us from bondage with the precious blood of Christ (1 Pet. 1:18–19)
  • he has given us rebirth through imperishable seed into new life (1 Pet. 1:23)
  • he has sanctified us by his Spirit (1 Pet. 1:2)
  • he is reserving for us an eternal inheritance (1 Pet. 1:4)
  • he protects us with his mighty power (1 Pet. 1:5)

And that’s just chapter 1! Peter’s two epistles ring with praise to the Lord and all that he has done for us.

E2R Turns 13 and It’s Time for a Change

I used to write about grace and nothing but grace.

When I started writing Escape to Reality 13 years ago, I wrote about forgiveness and the unconditional love of God and how the cross changed everything. I wrote about eternal security and eternal rewards, healing and holiness, repentance and righteousness.

But over the years, I began delving into other topics.

In 2012, I warned against the dangers of inclusionism. In 2015, I began writing about eschatology, the rapture and the great tribulation. In 2018, my theme was marriage and divorce, and women in ministry. Last week I wrote about artificial intelligence.

Any time I have branched out, there has been a small chorus of voices saying, “Paul, I wish you’d stick to grace.”

I get that.

You may like what I write about grace but you may not like what I write about _______ (insert your topic).

Maybe you’ve become a little wary. You think, is this article going to be about grace or has Paul gone off fighting another one of his crusades?

Fear not. It’s time for a change. I’m returning to my roots.

I recently started a weekly “Word of Grace” newsletter that is pure grace and always will be. It’s a short word to encourage you and strengthen your faith. This grace-only newsletter comes from The Grace Commentary and you can see the past four articles here.

Escape to Reality will continue as normal, meaning I will write about whatever the Lord lays on my heart or whatever takes my fancy. I like to think that everything I write here is infused with sweet grace and I want to thank those of you who follow me down my various rabbit trails.
