The position we have proclaimed that the ministry of the Spirit of grace has replaced the Old Covenant of death and condemnation, will frequently lead to the accusation that we are sending the message it's okay to sin. Covenant mixers instinctively assume if we have no list of rules to live by, it encourages people to run wild and that behavior doesn't matter. Since their own spiritual identity has been bound to following rules, they have a hard time understanding the freedom from law that came through Christ and the new heart and motivation of love that is found in Him. Our growth in grace will change our perspective and our desires.
510. The Ten Commandments in the New Testament
Legalistic Christians who feel our message of free and unlimited grace is considered erroneous and hyper, will argue that all of the top ten commandments are found in the New Testament. They'll reason that this means they are meant to be included as a part of the New Covenant. Jesus stated one of the greatest commandments was to love your neighbor as yourself, which is not one of the Ten. So just exactly how many of the 613 laws within the law are we supposed to abide by? This week, we'll take a look at some of the context surrounding the references to these commands found in new covenant writings and reveal the true intent of the entire law.
509. Engraved on Stones: The End of the Ten
Traditional Bible teaching has led Christians to believe the Ten Commandments were separate from the rest of the Mosaic Law given to Israel. Some will even declare they were not part of the Old Covenant, and since they were letters engraved on stones, they were meant to be applied forever. Yet scripture clearly states they were considered part of the law and were called tablets of the covenant.
It’s a man-made doctrine that says that the Law is broken up into sections (moral, civil, ceremonial, etc.), and that part of it was done away with but yet in the New Covenant we’re supposed to keep a certain part of it. The scriptures do not declare such a separation or distinction in the law of God. The Law of God is a package deal. The Apostle Paul called the law the ministry of death that brought condemnation. Paul also explained why they no longer have glory and came to an end, to be replaced with a more glorious and permanent ministry of the Spirit.

508. The Love Motivation
As we proclaim a message of God's unconditional love and free grace apart from the works of the law and commandments, those bound by legalistic teaching will ask us whether behavior matters. It's hard for them to grasp wanting to do what is right and good apart from rules and regulations. In the same way that God has shown forgiveness and love to us in this New Covenant, as new creations in Christ, we are now empowered to do the same. It's because we're branches, engrafted into the tree of life, bearing his fruit apart from law.
507. As Jesus Is, So Also Are We
We can relate to Jesus being righteous, holy and perfect, but it can be quite another story when it comes to laying hold of our identity as believers. Since he abides in us, and we abide in him, we have inherited these same qualities and Jesus has become our righteousness, justification, sanctification and perfection. "By this, love is perfected with us, so that we may have confidence in the day of judgment; because as He is, so also are we in this world" (1 John 4:17).
505. Fellowship Forever
Have you ever wondered whether you've done something that would hinder your fellowship with God? Those feelings of doubt about where you stand with God, or the fear of being in and out of fellowship are rooted in dead works and self-righteousness. The New Covenant of Christ is an agreement God made with God, and he cannot deny himself. Whoever has the Son has life. He is our guarantee and you've been called into fellowship with Him.
506. The Gift of Sanctification
In the world of Christian legalism, justification may be presented as a free gift, but sanctification is often taught to be a progressive process that we must work at in order to possess or experience. This misunderstanding of what was accomplished for us through the work of the cross will eventually lead people back into a mentality of works and guilt, or self-righteousness and boasting in themselves. Jesus has (already) become our sanctification, and it cannot be defined outside of what he did on our behalf.
The word "sanctified" means "set apart," "purified," "made holy." Sanctification is a matter of being set apart to God, by His gift, by grace through faith. This is a finished work. All believers are heaven-ready right now at this very moment, because they have been sanctified once and for all!
